NEWS: Academy Named Finalist in Global Education Awards

As reported by Derby Telegraph, a Derbyshire school has earned international recognition for its outstanding community engagement, securing a spot as a finalist in the prestigious World’s Best School Prizes

Heanor Gate Spencer Academy is among the final 10 schools globally in the Community Collaboration category, celebrating its deep-rooted partnerships with local organisations – from food banks and care homes to a community boxing gym.

The school’s work in the local community has been transformative, with pupils actively participating in a wide range of initiatives. A standout project involves collaboration with a local gym and boxing club, where students take part in boxing, self-defence, spin classes and breakfast clubs. These activities are designed to boost self-esteem, promote wellbeing and reduce anti-social behaviour, giving students a sense of structure and belonging.

Principal Matthew Jones said the school’s recognition was “a proud moment for the entire community,” noting that the projects not only benefit students but also strengthen the bond between the school and local residents.

The World’s Best School Prizes were founded by T4 Education in 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic, to spotlight the schools making the most meaningful impact both inside and outside the classroom. The awards span five categories: Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity and Supporting Healthy Lives.

Winners of the prizes will be announced later this year, with each category winner receiving a cash prize to further develop their initiatives.
