As International Plastic Free Day approaches on May 25, schools are being urged to reflect on their environmental impact and commit to one day without single-use plastics
The annual event highlights the growing global plastic crisis, with over 380 million tons produced each year – half of which is single-use. With only 9% of plastic recycled, most ends up polluting landfills, communities and oceans.
For schools looking to take meaningful action, EdExec LIVE Cumbria & the Pennines, taking place on Wednesday, May 21 at Carlisle Racecourse, offers timely support. One of the day’s highlights will be the “Creating an Effective Sustainability Action Plan” seminar, featuring expert guidance from sustainability leaders.
Speakers include Bryan McCourt, a net zero consultant with Zenergi who has helped schools secure major grant funding; Leon Korner, an energy specialist with over £60 million in successful public sector funding projects; and Julie Rowlandson, sustainability officer at St Bart’s Multi Academy Trust and an active voice in national education sustainability networks.
Together, they will offer practical insights into funding, strategic planning and embedding sustainability in school operations – supporting education leaders in their journey toward net zero.
