As reported in Yahoo news, schools in Scotland are being urged to remind parents whose children qualify for free school meals to check their eligibility for extra support over the summer holidays
The charity Advice Direct Scotland has issued a call for families to apply for help before the school term ends, warning that many may miss out on vital payments intended to cover meal costs during the break.
Rebecca Fagan, benefit and welfare information officer at Advice Direct Scotland, said: “Many Scots are facing financial difficulties due to the cost-of-living and energy crises and will be worried about holiday-related expenses on top of rising bills. With the summer holidays approaching fast, it’s crucial that families know about the support available to help provide healthy meals for their children.”
In Scotland, families may be eligible for summer holiday meal payments if they receive one of the following benefits: Universal Credit (with earned income below £850 per month), Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, or support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. Some households receiving Child Tax Credit may also qualify, depending on income levels. Teachers and school leaders in Scotland are being encouraged to signpost eligible families towards this financial assistance now, before term ends. The support is not automatic in all local authority areas, so checking and applying early is essential.
While this advice is specific to Scotland, schools in England are also being encouraged to raise awareness among their own families. With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to affect many, schools across the UK have a growing responsibility to ensure families are informed about what help is available and how to access it in time.
