NEWS: National School Sports Week Champions ‘Always Active’ Approach

National School Sports Week (NSSW) returns from 16–22 June 2025, with thousands of schools across the UK uniting behind the theme “Always Active”

Organised by the Youth Sport Trust and powered by Sports Direct in collaboration with Under Armour, the campaign encourages every child to achieve the UK Chief Medical Officers’ recommendation of 60 minutes of daily physical activity – or 20 minutes for children with disabilities or special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

In celebration of the Youth Sport Trust’s 30th anniversary, NSSW aims to host the UK’s largest-ever Sports Day on 21 June, energising pupils, families, schools and communities. Despite clear benefits – Sport England data shows fewer than half of children meet the recommended 60 minutes of activity daily. Central to this year’s push is adopting an Always Active approach: promoting movement not just in PE lessons but woven into the school day.

A key innovation this year is the Always Active Uniforms initiative. The campaign calls for flexible, sport-friendly clothing that allows pupils to move freely throughout the day. New research from YouGov shows strong support for the idea: 74% of parents and 67% of teachers agree that schools should adopt more movement-friendly uniforms to help children stay active. Pilot schools like Dame Dorothy Primary in Sunderland have already reported increased participation and enthusiasm for physical activity following uniform changes.
