As reported by East Riding.gov, Sir Richard Branson has praised the entrepreneurial efforts of pupils at Newport Primary School, saying he “loved reading” their story of creativity and business spirit
Since 2020, the school has participated in the Make £5 Grow programme, which challenges pupils to turn a £5 investment into profit through their own business ideas. What began with just 30 pupils has grown into a school-wide initiative involving 240 children.
From homemade jewellery and baked goods to car washes and breakfast tuck shops, pupils have imagined, made, marketed and sold their products — learning key skills in teamwork, budgeting and resilience.
Headteacher Ms Debby O’Connell said the programme has had a lasting impact: “The project has not only empowered children with entrepreneurial skills but has also planted the seeds of confidence, creativity and community-mindedness.”
