As reported by the BBC, teachers in England will receive a 3.5% pay rise from September, while new measures will restrict the salaries and pay increases of academy trust executives

Teachers in England will receive a 3.5% pay increase from September, followed by a further 3% rise the following year, as the government confirmed a new pay settlement alongside tighter controls on academy trust executive salaries.

The Department for Education said it would provide an additional £1.8 billion to help fund the award, although schools will be expected to meet the first 1% of each annual increase from existing budgets.

Alongside the pay announcement, ministers unveiled new restrictions on academy trust executive pay. From September, trusts will need government approval before advertising leadership posts with salaries above £174,000, while chief executives will be prevented from receiving larger annual pay rises than classroom teachers.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the settlement reflected the government’s commitment to the teaching profession and argued it was right that executive pay should not outpace increases awarded to teachers.

The measures are intended to strengthen oversight of academy trust salaries following concerns about high executive pay across parts of the sector.

However, the pay award received a cautious response from the National Education Union, which said it was considering its next steps, including the possibility of formally balloting members on industrial action.
