Twelve Festive Fixes for a Safe and Happy School

Twelve Days Christmas2 C

Inspired by the classic carol, we’ve unwrapped twelve practical – and playful – ideas to keep your team and school running smoothly all through the festive season

Forget the partridge in a pear tree or the five gold rings – the most important thing you can give your team this Christmas season (aside from a new coffee machine, of course) is a happy, healthy and safe place to work. One where they feel confident, supported and able to reach their full potential. From health and safety fixes to team-building treats, we’ve put together twelve top tips to keep your ladies dancing and your lords leaping throughout the festivities.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my SBL gave to me…

Warm and Comfy Classrooms

Now the temperature has dropped, use the opportunity to sniff out any cracks, gaps or air leaks around the school. Complete an audit and ask staff if they have noticed any cold spots where you might be losing heat – and money!

Safe and Dry Spaces

Instigate a new routine of checking entrances and doorways after lunch and during the morning arrival rush – all those wet coats and muddy boots can soon turn a corridor into a slippery hazard.

Danger-Free Decorations

Fairy lights, heaters, and decorations can easily overload circuits. Make sure any seasonal electrics are PAT Tested and have been stored correctly through the year. Use cable ties and tidies to avoid dragging cables or trip hazards.

Thoughtful Festive Food

It’s easy for festive treats to linger on staffroom counters and cause confusion about what’s communal. Introduce some clearly marked “help yourself” boxes – that way there won’t be any confusion over what’s up for grabs!

Keep Things Light

If possible, swap your standard bulbs for ones that mimic natural daylight to help support healthy energy levels. If the budget allows, consider creating a small “daylight zone” with a SAD lamp.

Encourage Digital Detox

Remind staff (and yourself) to schedule regular screen-free time. Set your out-of-office, silence your phone and step outside for a walk or a face-to-face chat with a colleague! A bit of fresh air and headspace can do wonders.

Hot Chocolate Happy Hour

A full-blown staff party isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. Try something cosy and inclusive instead – a “Hot Chocolate Happy Hour.” It’s budget-friendly, alcohol-free and a lovely way to bring people together for a card exchange or Secret Santa reveal.

New Year Vision Board Session

Gather the team to reflect on the past year and visualise goals for 2026. Use magazines, coloured pens and a bit of glitter to bring ambitions to life – it’s creative, collaborative and a great way to get everyone on the same page!

The Great Staffroom Declutter

Before the year ends, make time for a group tidy-up of shared spaces – desks, cupboards, even the dreaded fridge drawer. It’s amazing how much lighter a team can feel when the clutter disappears.

The Twelve-Minute Clean-Up

Each day in the final week of term, dedicate twelve minutes to small but essential maintenance checks: testing emergency lights, topping up grit supplies, or checking heating controls.

The Frosty Fire Drill

Hold a short winter-specific safety drill. Even if it’s just a tabletop review, make sure everyone knows procedures in darker mornings or icy conditions – no one wants to be slipping through a fire exit in a snowstorm.

Santa’s Suggestion Box

Put up a fun “Santa’s Mailbox” where staff and pupils can drop anonymous ideas for improving the school or workplace. Open them in January – you’ll often find some creative, genuine gems.

As the term draws to a close, it’s worth remembering that the most meaningful gifts don’t come wrapped in ribbon. Creating a safe, warm and happy environment for your team is what really makes the season bright. And that’s something you do all year round.

So, take a breath, enjoy the celebrations and step into the new year knowing you’ve given your team the best gift of all – a place where they can truly thrive.
