The client
Parrs Wood High School is the largest local authority-maintained state school in Greater Manchester and the fourth largest in the UK. The school is more like a village campus and boasts a significant sporting community with both curricular and community events hosted after school and at weekends throughout the year.
With such a large and complex community, there was a necessity to ensure that high quality waste management and sanitary procedures were in place.
The project
B&M Waste Services met with Parrs Wood High School to assess how it could help them to improve their total recycling and waste management programme, maximise energy efficiency, minimise costs related to waste and reduce the school’s carbon footprint.
B&M Waste Services carried out a full audit and implemented a school-wide strategy which included:
- 25 Internal recycling bins – for recyclable waste such as cans, bottles, paper and cardboard
- Two general waste FEL containers and one recyclable FEL container
- Internal food recycling bins for all canteen and food technology waste
- A collection service for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) waste, such as computers, TV and fridges, which is all now recycled
- A skip for metals – the school now gets a rebate for its chosen charity Reuben’s Retreat for all recycled metal
B&M’s commitment to education, service delivery and its carbon neutral plus status were intrinsic to creating a cultural change which saw students and staff embrace an environmentally friendly approach to waste. The establishment of a CO2 committee made up of eco-conscious sixth form students helped to spread the recycling message to others and B&M supported it through giving presentations and supplying posters and stickers to display throughout the school. To offset the school’s carbon emissions, B&M worked with the school to plant a significant number of trees on-site, creating a green area for students and staff to enjoy the environment.
The impact
Parrs Wood High School’s CO2 Committee helped to save 277 tons of C02 per year through its work on energy reduction. With B&M Waste Services on board, year on year the school has seen an and energy saving of 37,317 kwh this is the equivalent to 583 TVs powered for a full year.
The school’s initial recovery figures were 0% with several improvements the school achieved 85.74% in January 2014. With improvements in B&Ms energy recovery facility the school achieved 100% diversion from landfill since 2019.
