Read Again: Essential Summer Preparations for Schools

Increase climate resiliency -

As the British summer approaches with its unpredictable weather, now is the perfect time to prepare your school for the season ahead and ensure everything is in place for a smooth transition

We may have only just forgotten the chill of winter, but before we know it, we’ll all be digging out the shorts and sunglasses. The British summer may be famous for its unpredictability, offering heatwaves in April or golden sunshine in October, but one thing is certain – it’s always wise to be prepared for anything!

Asthma and Allergies

As summer approaches, it’s important to start preparing for allergy season. One of the first steps is to ensure your air conditioning system is ready to go. Check that it’s functioning properly, and make sure it has been cleaned and tested since its last use. Over time, dust, pollen and mold can accumulate in the filters and ducts, making it essential to give the system a thorough cleaning.

Additionally, check the ventilation points throughout the building to ensure that fresh, clean air is circulating effectively. Any blockages or dirty filters could contribute to poor air quality, exacerbating allergies or asthma symptoms. It’s also important to update your cleaning protocols. Make sure your cleaning teams are aware of any specific measures needed to improve air quality, such as regular filter changes, deep cleaning of air ducts and the use of hypoallergenic cleaning products.

Groundworks and Greenery

With the arrival of the warmer months, school business managers can start thinking about the outdoor spaces and greenery around the school. Whether you have expansive grounds or just a small window box outside reception, preparing your outdoor areas can make a big difference in creating a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere for both students and staff.

Now is the ideal time to arrange for any gardening or landscaping work that may be needed. Ensure that the outdoor areas are in top condition, particularly those that will be used for sports days, outdoor competitions, or other seasonal events. This might include tidying up lawns, planting flowers, or addressing any overgrown areas that could become hazardous.

School Security

Summer brings with it the excitement of the long, sun-filled break (or at least, it does for the students!). While there will still be staff onsite throughout the break, it’s important to ensure that the school is properly secured during the quieter days when no one is around.

Start by conducting a thorough test on all doors, gates and entry points to ensure that they are functioning properly. Make sure that all locks, especially those on external doors and windows, are secure and can’t be easily bypassed. Take extra care to check any areas that may be less frequently used but still vulnerable, such as storage rooms, side entrances and outbuildings.

It’s also wise to take a walk around the school’s exterior, looking for any building damage, gaps in fences, or areas of the school that may need attention. These overlooked spots can become easy access points for intruders.

Prep Your Communication

Start organising and preparing any important updates to communicate with staff, students and parents. By getting ahead of the game, you can ensure a smoother transition into the summer break and a more organised start to the new term.

Begin by compiling details about any holiday clubs, summer activities, or enrichment programs being offered during the break. Include dates, times, locations, costs and how to register, so parents and guardians can plan accordingly.

In addition, it’s essential to provide early notice of back-to-school activities. Share key dates for the start of the next term, including school orientation, meet-and-greets, or any special events that will help students and families prepare.

By taking these proactive steps, you can ensure that your school is well-prepared for the summer season. Getting ahead of these quick fixes now not only helps create a safer and more comfortable environment but also sets the stage for a smooth and successful transition into the new term. Embrace the sunny days ahead, knowing you’ve got everything covered!
