British Science Week offers a fantastic opportunity to engage young minds with hands-on, creative projects that inspire curiosity and exploration. With the right tools and support, you can make science come alive for your students, encouraging them to pursue STEM subjects and careers in the future.

While the official celebrations won’t begin until 7-16 March 2025, here’s how school business leaders can get a head start on planning some fun and educational activities for your school that won’t break the budget!

Change and Adapt

The British Science Association has launched a free “activity taster pack,” offering a wealth of resources for schools to explore in preparation for the event.  Created in partnership with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the pack is designed for young people aged 5 to 14+, featuring engaging activities that foster curiosity in science while exploring the theme of “Change and Adapt.”

Encouraging STEM studies

In addition to the activities, the taster pack includes inspiring role model stories from the Smashing Stereotypes campaign, showcasing diverse individuals in science. This is an excellent resource for schools looking to promote inclusivity and challenge traditional stereotypes within STEM fields. School business leaders can use these stories to inspire students and broaden their perspectives on science careers.

According to the UK government, jobs in STEM fields are growing at nearly twice the rate of non-STEM jobs, with nearly 2.5 million STEM-related jobs projected by 2025. However, a recent report revealed that fewer than 40% of students in the UK consider studying STEM subjects at higher levels. So, there’s never been a better reason to get your pupils, staff and families interested in science.

Securing Potential Funding

For those in schools that may face financial challenges, the pack also provides valuable information on applying for funding to support activities. The British Science Week Kick Start Grant is available to help schools in need of financial support to run their events. Additionally, schools can apply for the British Science Association’s Engage Grant, which covers costs for running CREST Awards – a programme that supports hands-on science investigations.

The full activity packs for British Science Week 2025 will be released this month and will be available for download on the official British Science Week website.
