Scottish councils to shut all secondary schools amid strikes

As reported by the BBC, thousands of secondary school students are facing another day off school because of strike action by teachers

East Ayrshire Council says all its secondary schools will be closed because of next week’s strike by the SSTA and NASUWT unions.

Inverclyde Council says most of its secondary schools will be closed to S1, S2 and S3 students.

Other councils are still working out what impact next week’s action may have and are still to confirm arrangements.

Almost all schools in Scotland were closed on Thursday last week because of a strike by EIS, the largest education union.

The SSTA and the NASUWT are holding strike action next Wednesday and Thursday after rejecting the latest pay offer. They plan to target different council areas each day.

East Ayrshire Council says its secondary schools will be closed on 7 December.

Park School, a facility in Kilmarnock for pupils with additional support needs (ASN), will also close. The council says it hopes to keep its primary schools open, while other ASN establishments and nurseries will operate as normal.

In Inverclyde, there will also be disruption at Craigmarloch School which serves primary and secondary pupils with additional support needs.

Argyll and Bute Council says Campbeltown Grammar School will be closed but expects that its other secondaries will be open to some pupils.

West Dunbartonshire Council expects all its schools to remain open.

Other councils are still to confirm their arrangements but hope to be able to do so in the next few days.
