The Big Spring Clean: Next Level Organisation

Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to roll up your sleeves, tackle those long-ignored tasks, and give your school a refreshing clean and organise

As the season changes, many of us begin planning for the big spring clean, a time to refresh and reorganise spaces for the remainder of the academic year. This period offers an opportunity to declutter, reassess storage solutions and ensure that classrooms, offices and other school areas are prepared for the busy months ahead.

For many, the big spring clean can be a daunting task. What might seem like a quick, simple project – such as clearing out a storage room – can quickly turn into hours of sorting through piles of items labelled ‘should probably keep,’ ‘might be useful one day,’ and ‘better not risk throwing out.’

Preparing in Advance

Effective preparation is key to a successful spring clean, and you can make the process more manageable and efficient by planning. For your staff, proper guidance on the right tools and systems can make all the difference in streamlining the task.

Start by ensuring that your school has the right organisational products. This includes a variety of storage options, such as labelled boxes, filing systems and containers for papers, supplies and classroom materials. Clear organisation from the outset will help sort items into categories – things to keep, things to discard and things to donate. By setting up these systems in advance, your team can stay on track and make quick decisions as they sort through various spaces.

Hard to Reach Places

Once storage areas – such as desks, cabinets and often-overlooked closets – are emptied, it’s time to tackle the cleaning process. In a school setting, you’ll likely encounter tougher cleaning jobs that require specialised tools. Standard cleaning supplies won’t always suffice for larger spaces or deeper cleaning tasks.

To address hard-to-reach areas, having some extendable cleaning brushes for corners and tight spaces can be incredibly useful. These tools can help clean areas behind bookshelves, filing cabinets and appliances without needing to move everything.

Staying Safe

Spring cleaning often involves sorting through neglected spaces, heavy lifting and addressing areas that have been out of sight for some time. It’s essential to keep safety top of mind during this process, as it can involve mould, dust and potentially hazardous materials that have built up in storage areas and classrooms. These airborne particles can present a risk to staff, especially for those with allergies or respiratory issues.

Make sure your team is properly equipped with suitable personal protective equipment (PPE). High-quality gloves will protect against rough surfaces and cleaning chemicals, while face masks or respirators will help avoid inhaling dust, mould spores, or other airborne contaminants. Protective eyewear is another key recommendation, especially when working with strong cleaning products or handling materials that might cause irritation to the eyes.

With the right preparation, tools and a little extra care, your school’s spring clean will be both manageable and rewarding! Tackling those tasks that usually get put off can be incredibly satisfying, and before you know it, your school will be organised and ready to tackle the rest of the year.
