Triumph Over Adversity

Overcoming business challenge and obstacles

Victory is all about patience. At the start of the new F1 season, Laura Williams takes a timely look back at one of her standout moments of last year!

“At long last…”

“Finally…!”

“About time!”

Yes, he did it. In May last year, British driver, Lando Norris won his first grand prix!

If you’re not an F1 fan you might think this is something that should have been easy – but the story behind the glory has been anything but straightforward. It’s been ‘six years, 110 race starts, 691 career points, 15 podiums including eight second places and one very painful wet race in Russia’ kind of complicated.

There has been team turbulence, contract conundrums, courting from competitors and a sizable amount of scepticism permeating the F1 paddock, but after his maiden win, Lando said: “This is all for the team. I stuck with McLaren because I could believe in them and do believe in them. Today we proved exactly that.”

As a McLaren and Lando fan, it’s fair to say his victory has been made all the sweeter given all the challenges that they’ve faced. So, what can we SBLs learn from all this?

Patience is Everything

The concept of time is subjective and depending on context and mindset, we can feel panicked that we have too little of it or frustrated that things don’t seem to be happening fast enough (if at all). Just because we don’t get the immediate gratification of a tangible success, doesn’t mean we’re unsuccessful or that success by our definition will never come.

Mark your Milestones

McLaren didn’t go straight from the back of the grid to the front (or from P19 in Miami 2023 to P1 in Miami 2024). There have been 11 podiums and a significant points haul in between; all markers of improvement and an upward performance trajectory. Each of those milestones provided assurance that they were on the right track as well as intelligence about what they needed to do next.

Haters Gonna Hate

Not everybody you come across will be supportive of you or your journey. In fact, some people may actively try and hinder you and even take great pleasure in those situations where things don’t go your way. But by keeping your head down, staying in your lane and focusing on what you need to do to keep moving forward, they will not be able to derail you from achieving your goal.

Of course, it might not be as simple as this…

Maybe you’ve decided it’s time to pull a Hamilton and find your Ferrari!

If you’re struggling to keep the faith in something right now, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I truly happy where I am?
  • Is it time to ask for more?
  • Is it time to allow myself to expect more?
  • Is it time to give myself permission to put myself first for a change?

Turn down the noise around you. Get quiet. Dig deep. Be bold, be brave and be you.
