Pay rise recommendations
The Education Secretary has accepted the STRB’s recommendation of a 5.5% pay increase, recognising the crucial role teachers play in shaping children’s futures. This 5.5% raise means that the average classroom teacher will see their salary increase by over £2,500, bringing the median salary for 2024/25 to over £49,000 annually. While this pay award applies to maintained schools, academies will retain the flexibility to set their own pay and conditions.
Funding information
Schools will receive an additional £1.1 billion in funding for the 2024-25 financial year to help cover their overall costs, including fully funding the teacher pay award at a national level. The government is also allocating an extra £97 million to support schools providing post-16 education (£63 million) and early years (£34 million) services.
The pay award affects both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 financial years. The additional funding announced only covers the 2024-25 portion of the award. The impact of the full year’s costs on schools will be considered when setting the 2025-26 budgets, which have yet to be finalised.
Teachers will begin receiving their new salaries in the autumn, with pay backdated to 1 September 2024.
Who does it apply to?
While the pay award applies solely to school teachers, the additional funding provided to schools also ensures they are nationally covered for the ongoing 2024-25 pay offer for support staff, which is still under negotiation.
