As reported by the BBC, Suffolk County Council is due to receive tens of millions in funding to support its SEND provision
Education for pupils in Suffolk with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is set to receive a £45m boost.
Suffolk County Council is aiming to create 800 new places for SEND pupils. The process is expected to take five years and cost £45m.
The first phase of this programme has been approved, and will make some of the required places available for September 2020.
Included in the programme is the building of new schools for SEND children in Ipswich, Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds.
Additionally, 36 specialist units in mainstream schools will be created.
The council will borrow a maximum of £30m, while the other £15m is expected to be drawn from Department for Education funding pots.
Labour education spokesperson, Jack Abbott, said he was “pleased that finance has now been secured”.
“The challenge now is to deliver these new places as quickly as possible,” he added.
Jo Hammond, of Suffolk Parent Carer Network, commented: “This investment gives us confidence that our hopes of all of our children and young people with special education needs and disabilities being able to access good quality education provision that is local to home, may become more of a reality.”
