As reported by the BBC News, close to 60% of school teachers in Jersey considered leaving their job over the course of the past year
Approximately 500 school teachers completed the government’s teacher survey report for 2021.
Teachers reported feeling undervalued, stressed and anxious, though most did also describe their job as “rewarding”.
50% of those asked said they had been verbally abused by pupils and 22% were threatened physically.
80% of teachers said they believed “pupil’s home life/parental guidance” was the major contributing factor for this poor behaviour.
In terms of job satisfaction, the figures show a reduction. In 2015, 87% of teachers surveyed reported themselves to be satisfied in their roles, compared to 79% in 2021.
Those in leadership roles at schools recorded a slightly lower job satisfaction of 74%.
After COVID-19, 44% of teachers said they were less satisfied with their role and up to 54% that they were always or often “stressed or anxious”.
