Phil Burton, SBM at Hallbrook & Cosby Primary School, gives a sneak preview of what you can expect from his seminar at EdExec LIVE
‘Sorry, we got it wrong!’ Words you never want to be saying in front of a HSE investigation panel. The effects on you as an individual when going through a HSE investigation should never be underestimated. This seminar will take a look at some of the things I did in my school which led to the accolade of the national award for Excellence in Health and Safety 2019.
Health and safety is a topic which many people are either fearful of, or don’t really see the importance of – but did you know that the HSE have an increased focus on the education sector at the moment?!
We’ll start at the beginning – thinking about the culture and experiences which shape and drive this agenda forward, and I’ll share tales of the incidents that have happened that I have dealt with – some of which you’ll be amazed at.
The seminar will explore the various steps we take to manage the people side of health and safety, including what we do when inducting new staff, how we communicate and share health and safety information, and what training we conduct for the team.
We’ll then take a look at how we manage compliance within the school – what systems do we have in place to demonstrate our commitment to delivering great health and safety practice? We have many brought in from other industries, including our one-stop compliance log book.
Finally – and crucially – we’ll consider what you can do to develop your knowledge and expertise in this area, and where you can go for information to show your commitment to ensuring the safety of the people and children in your school.
This seminar will take a light-hearted, but extremely useful, approach to managing this area, with lots of useful ideas you can take back to your school so that, hopefully, you’ll never be in a position to have to say, ‘I’m sorry, we got it wrong!’
