Analysis paralysis? Try the Phoebe Method!

Left or right? Up or down? In this article, Education Executive’s Laura Williams encourages you try the ‘Phoebe method’ when overthinking means your brain just can’t take anymore

If you’re a Friends fan, you’ll know that when feeling confused or conflicted, Phoebe has a quirky way of figuring out what she really wants…

She demonstrates her method on Joey when he can’t decide whether to take the north or south route to Vegas by asking him a series of questions.

She asks him to answer quickly and to make seemingly inane choices between things like ‘Peanut butter or egg whites?’ and ‘Would you rather be a fireman or a swimmer?’ before finally asking him ‘North route or South route?’ – catching him off guard, making him choose fast and thus showing what he really wants without allowing him to overthink.

I admit it. I do this too!

Not all the time (as some stuff does need serious thought!) but when I’m dithering and going back and forth on something, it’s a good way to tap into my gut when my head gets too noisy!

  • What have you been procrastinating about recently?
  • What are you overthinking?
  • What is making you feel conflicted?

Try the ‘Phoebe Method’ on something that’s been niggling at you and see what happens… and if you need to – ask a friend to help!
