How your school can celebrate Pride Month 2022

Pride Month takes place every year in June, to mark the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York and recognise the influence of the LGBTQ+ community

As well as being an opportunity for celebration, Pride Month is also a chance to raise awareness of current issues facing the community.

This year is particularly significant as it marks 50 years since the first Pride march took place in the United Kingdom.

Organisations and Resources

Trade Union, The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) offers a wide range of resources to help schools celebrate Pride Month, both during the month and throughout the school year. Here is a small selection you may wish to explore:

• free resources are available on the LGBT+ History Month website
• JustLikeUs has a number of free and paid-for resources to support schools helping to make education more inclusive for LGBT+ pupils, staff and families.
• Diversity Role Models provides a range of primary and secondary resources that are available to download for free, including ‘role model’ stories and videos to help schools discuss LGBT+ identities, the impact of bullying and how to embrace difference and include everyone
• Diverse Educators has developed an LGBTQ+ Inclusion Toolkit, which includes a series of books, blogs, videos articles and podcasts to support members in exploring resources to support the work in their schools
• Supporting LGBT inclusion in education: guidance and resources from Stonewall
• Supporting LGB+ and trans staff – first released in 2017, and jointly developed by NAHT and Stonewall, this guidance is intended to help schools become places where all staff can thrive and feel confident to be authentic about who they are.
