As part of our ongoing series exploring the challenges schools face with data management, we continue our focus on the Insight Unlocked initiative, a collaboration between Education Executive and SIMS. This initiative aims to address key issues identified by the education community regarding data systems.
If you haven’t participated yet, we invite you to join our SBL survey. By sharing your experiences, you’ll help us gain a deeper understanding of the data management obstacles schools are encountering.
In this article, we dive further into some of the common challenges uncovered during our research. This time, we focus on the critical areas of system integration, communication and accessibility.
Output and Integration
In many schools, reporting capabilities are often limited to generic templates that provide basic overviews of key metrics. While these reports may offer a high-level snapshot of performance, they fall short when it comes to delivering the detailed, actionable insights that school business leaders need to make informed decisions.
This lack of depth in reporting can be a significant obstacle, as it forces school business leaders to spend valuable time manually extracting and manipulating data from various sources to create the more granular insights they need.
Effective Data Communication
For school business leaders, it’s essential to be able to pinpoint and highlight specific data points that are crucial for decision-making. Whether it’s financial data, student performance metrics, or operational efficiency statistics, identifying the right information at the right time can significantly impact how resources are allocated, and which priorities are addressed
Traditional reports often present information in a one-size-fits-all format, which can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate. These reports are usually structured to accommodate a wide range of users, but they lack the flexibility to allow SBLs to focus on the specific areas that matter most to their decision-making process.
Real-time Data Accessibility
Timely data extraction is often challenging, with the sheer volume of information SBLs utilise making it difficult to isolate what’s needed. Sorting through this vast amount of data to isolate the most relevant and actionable insights often becomes a time-consuming task. Without the right tools and processes in place, SBLs may struggle to quickly pinpoint the data needed for informed decision-making.
Another significant barrier to timely data extraction is the issue of delayed syncing between systems. In many schools, different departments or functions rely on separate platforms to track and manage data. These platforms may not update in real-time or may have syncing delays, meaning that the information available at any given moment may not reflect the most current status. When school data systems are not well connected, information often has to be manually transferred between platforms, increasing the time it takes to extract and consolidate data.
Working Together
Ultimately, no one has a clearer understanding of the challenges schools face when it comes to connecting the dots of their data than those who are working with it every day. Your unique perspective is invaluable in helping us pinpoint the existing and emerging challenges and identify effective solutions.
Through partnership with Education Executive on this initiative, SIMS is dedicated to supporting school business leaders and giving back to the education community and aim to gain an even deeper understanding of how they can support the sector with solution led insight and ideas.
