New St Mary’s scholarships programme launched with a focus on STEM

A new scholarships programme is on offer at St Mary’s Senior School in Colchester for September 2023

Girls joining in year seven can access academic, arts, sports and all-round scholarships including a brand-new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scholarship which will also be awarded to a limited number of students going into years eight to 10 in September 2023.

There is no financial assessment for St Mary’s scholarship applicants, all scholarships are awarded solely on merit and in open competition, and there is no set limit to the number of scholarships that may be offered in one year of entry. Scholarships attract a partial fee remission, at the discretion of the principal.

Mrs Nicola Griffiths, St Mary’s principal said “We are excited to launch our new, enhanced scholarship programme, designed to accelerate the development of students that are able in a variety of disciplines. Scholars act as role models and leaders to other students and as ambassadors for St Mary’s. The girls are encouraged, and expected, to make the most of the wealth of educational opportunities available to them to extend, broaden and strengthen their aptitudes and talents, and to gain valuable experience that will stand them in good stead for the future.”

Scholarships are available to girls wishing to join St Mary’s Senior School in year seven who show a strong aptitude for the arts (art, drama and music) and sports. There is also the opportunity to be put forward for the all-round (Comrie) scholarship, named in honour of Miss Phyllis Comrie, St Mary’s headmistress, 1935-1957. These all-round scholarships are awarded following interviews to those with the potential to make a substantial contribution to the life of the school. In addition to those awarded academic scholarships as a result of exceptional performance in the year seven entrance assessment, the new STEM scholarships will be awarded on the basis of applications and interviews, to those who show a passion for and talent in this area. For this year only, a limited number of these STEM scholarships will also be awarded to students going into years eight to 10 in September 2023.

The deadline to apply for a 2023 year seven scholarship is Sunday 9 October 2022.
