Recently, Laura Williams rewatched one of her favourite films, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Which led to some thoughts on asking ‘What If?’ and finding some balance
The movie follows Andie Anderson, a journalist who writes a “How To” column and takes on the challenge of (drumroll!) attracting, dating and losing a guy in just ten days. What ensues is a series of hilarious and absurd antics, from a dramatic duet of “You’re So Vain” to the infamous love fern!
Anyone Else Overthinking This?
The thing is, as I was rewatching it for the millionth time, I realised something about myself…If Andie is the “How To” girl, I’m more like the “What If” girl – Andie’s overthinking cousin.
My brain is always buzzing with possibilities, running every scenario through my head until I’ve catastrophised myself into a tangled mess! It’s a bit like trying to write the perfect “How To” but instead of sticking to a plan, I’m constantly asking, “What if this happens?” or “What if I’d done that differently?”
If you’re anything like me, with a mind that never seems to switch off, you’ll know exactly what I mean! As SBLs, we often pride ourselves on being thorough and prepared, but sometimes our busy brains can send us spiralling into a loop of endless possibilities and worries. And let’s be honest, it’s exhausting.
So, if you find yourself in a similar boat, here’s a little empathy and advice from one “What If” girl to another: it’s okay to embrace the chaos a bit but try not to let it consume you.
Find Your Balance
One thing that’s helped me is finding small ways to break those overthinking spirals. Whether it’s stepping outside for a quick walk, jotting down my thoughts on paper, or tidying up a cluttered space, these simple actions bring a sense of control and help calm the chaos. At the end of the day, it’s about finding balance.
Be bold like Andie – embrace the uncertainty, accept the craziness and remind yourself that you don’t need all the answers right now. Life’s a journey, and sometimes the best thing we can do is enjoy the ride, love fern and all!
P.S. Remember, even the “What If” girl needs a break. So, pick one thing this week – drink your tea hot, take that lunch break, or leave on time for once. You’ve got this!
