Education, as a sector, faces a pressing need to confront climate change and environmental damage, a challenge that has been met with slow regulatory responses. In this article, we dive into the journey of Oasis Community Learning as they navigate towards net zero emissions, exemplifying a path of sustainable innovation and environmental responsibility for SBLs and educational institutions.

In the past, opportunities were missed in the school-building programs to incorporate cutting-edge technologies that could have accelerated progress towards achieving net-zero emissions. Even today, the Crown Commercial Service’s procurement framework does not give due priority to the environmental impact of the education supply chain, although the winds of change are gradually sweeping through.

Furthermore, contributions to the school curriculum have been sporadic, often characterised by ad-hoc add-ons rather than a comprehensive overhaul. However, there is hope on the horizon. The Department for Education’s draft strategy on sustainability and climate change, initiated in April 2022, signals a renewed focus on addressing these challenges across the sector.

This strategy could potentially elevate sustainability to an integral part of school Ofsted inspections, underscoring its pivotal role in the realm of education. To achieve the ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2030, schools and trusts must embark on a holistic journey, wherein they cease to be contributors to climate change. This entails a comprehensive assessment of energy consumption, travel, dietary choices, supplies, waste management, procurement practices, and the overall school environment.

Schools must scrutinise not only their direct environmental impact but also consider the ripple effects upstream and downstream. For example, regarding school canteen food, this means auditing not only the carbon footprint of specific food products, such as meat versus plant-based protein, but also meticulously managing food waste.

The initial significant stride towards sustainability involves embedding an environmental strategy across educational institutions, whether they are single schools or large Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs). Appointing a senior leader to lead environmental initiatives and seamlessly integrating environmental education into the curriculum are crucial steps. This integration prompts students to reflect on their actions and their role in shaping a sustainable future.

The milestones along the Oasis Community Learning journey towards net zero serve as guiding beacons, offering valuable insights and a roadmap for those of us striving to embrace sustainability.
