It’s common to worry about declining health, losing independence and job security as we age. Ageing brings physical, mental and emotional changes, but with some effort, you can overcome fears about getting older and start embracing the positives. Remember, ageing isn’t just about growing older—it’s also about gaining wisdom.

Change your thinking

A common myth is that ageing inevitably leads to decline, but this is far from the truth. Many people find that as they grow older, they start to focus more on what truly matters. Just as ‘what if’ thoughts can create anxiety, positive and calming thoughts can help soothe your nervous system. Once you recognise and accept your anxious thoughts about ageing, you can begin to reframe them.

Take on new challenges

Embracing ageing can provide an opportunity to reassess our values and passions, uncovering new interests and opportunities. As we grow older, asking ourselves, “What do I want?” can be a powerful exercise in envisioning our future. Older adults offer a wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience that enrich the workplace and community. They can make significant contributions as mentors, guides, and advisors.

Embrace what you’ve gained

Instead of fixating on what we feel we’ve lost over time, it’s often more fulfilling to concentrate on what we’ve gained. Adding a daily gratitude practice to your routine can significantly shift your perspective and alleviate anxiety. Consider the value of your experiences and how they can be shared and utilised.

So, as you navigate the journey of ageing, remember that it’s not just about the years adding up—it’s about the wisdom stacking up too! Embrace the changes, savour the gains and don’t forget to find joy in the process. Here’s to being seasoned and super!
