In the ever-evolving landscape of English education, the challenge of recruiting and retaining teachers, especially in schools serving disadvantaged communities, remains an enduring conundrum. The numbers speak volumes, with teacher attrition rates soaring and vacancies going unfilled (NFER, 2022). Dissatisfaction with work-life balance further compounds the issue, placing teachers behind their peers in professions like nursing and policing (Worth et al., 2018).
Yet, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon – the promise of flexible working. A ray of optimism has emerged, suggesting that embracing flexibility could significantly boost teacher satisfaction, well-being, and ultimately retention (Lynch et al., 2016; Worth and Bamford, 2017; Worth, Lazzari and Hillary, 2017; Buchanan et al., 2018). This report dives into the potential implications of flexible working for school business leaders, offering a glimpse into the changing tides of teacher recruitment and retention strategies.
